  2. being able to laugh out loud at work, because no one else was in the office.
  3. discussing my date with friends when I got home.
  4. finishing a bad book, because now I don’t have to read it anymore, and for that I’m very thankful.
  5. bedtime.

  1. the woman who asked for directions and then stayed to talk for half an hour about the city and my life here.
  2. having an old, retired gentleman explain something that I had always been curious about.
  3. being able to give advice and a hug to a stranger who was having a very bad day and even though I didn’t know her, I was able to make her feel better.
  4. the man who was having as good a day as I was.
  5. conversations with people I’ve never met before.

  1. the flash of red satin lining in a man’s perfectly tailored jacket.
  2. the rich yellow of the Chinese perfume bottle my dad brought me from an antique shop in San Francisco two years ago.
  3. the metallic sheen of pigeon feathers when the light hits them.
  4. the green of the lime that is in my glass of ice cold water.
  5. the blue glow from my computer screen that is filling my living room.

  1. needing to regroup after a long day, and deciding to sit on the beach and watch the incredible sunset.
  2. trekking through the sand in high heels and a dress.
  3. not making an ass of myself as I made my way down the beach.
  4. leaving a hilarious message on my sister’s answering machine about my adventures in the sand.
  5. deciding that the other girl on the beach who was wearing heels just looked silly, whereas I looked poised and in control.
